More Information |
Area Information : The town''s skyline is dominated by the ruins of St. Hilda''s Abbey, high on the East Cliff. Spreading below, a maze of alleyways and narrow streets run down to the busy quayside.
From the old town, 199 steps lead up to the parish church of St. Mary, one of the finest examples of Anglo-Saxon churches in the country. The graveyard of St. Mary’s provided Bram Stoker with the inspiration to write his world-famous book, Dracula.
The Heritage Centre is situated next to the abbey. The centre houses the history and folklore of Whitby in the refurbished abbey house. The centre uses modern technology to enhance your visit and to make history come alive.
You could also enjoy a boat trip. Choose between the old lifeboat and the mini-Endeavour, then sail out to sea and look back at the wonderful port of Whitby.
If you are feeling energetic, why not walk the 3 miles (5 km) to Sandsend along Whitby’s golden beach. If all that sounds a little energetic, just hire a deckchair, read a book and relax.
