The Cumberland Hotel is situated along the a686. If you''re travelling from the South-East turn left at Scotch Corner on the A1 and travel westwards on the A66 until a signpost for Barnard Castle. Turn right and follow the signs for the B6277, Barnard Castle and Middleton-in-Teesdale. When you reach Middleton-in-Teesdale turn left at the junction in the town and keep on the B6277. When you reach Alston (after passing through dramatic countryside) drive down the cobbled main street and turn left at the bottom of the road. The Cumberland Hotel is on the right. If you are travelling from the South-West, head North on the M6 until junction 40 (Penrith). Turn right and take the second left on the roundabout heading East. At the next roundabout take the A686 for Alston. The road heads towards the unmistakable hills of the North Pennines. When you head down into Alston Moor after Hartside Pass, keep on the road and go over the bridge into Alston. The Cumberland Hotel is a little way along on the left just past the garage.
